we work hard, we play hard

Last night was quiet.

Good thing I’m working five shifts this week, because I think that’s what it’s gonna take just to bring in the normal amount of money I require to keep my head above water. If it wasn’t for the cab hailing apps on my two extra cell phones, I might not have made much at all, but thankfully six long rides to and from the avenues came in the form of digital hails from Flywheel and Instantcab.

That and staying out for eleven and a half hours, now that my cab company has relaxed its policies and allowed drivers to work a full twelve-hour shift. Not that I wanted to work the full twelve, mind you, but as business was slow, a little extra time for the same gate so I could snag a couple of extra rides is still money in my pocket.

And I still found a little time in there to get a couple of extras in while I was on the clock.

I managed to pop a ride out near a friend’s house in the deep Sunset around eight o’clock, so I got to stop by and give her a hug for her birthday. And I swung through a mall just before closing to take care of a little last-minute gift shopping.

There isn’t enough time left before I go home for the holidays, really. In seventy-two hours I’m going to be doing laundry and gunning for the airport for an 8:15 flight and I’ve got plenty to do before that happens.

Then again, there isn’t ever really enough time to get everything done. I’m constantly running behind somewhere, the feeling of time nipping at my heels all of the time unless I’ve stopped and put everything aside completely.

Which is I guess why I take vacations like the one coming up starting next week, because once I get on that plane, there’s nothing I can do but relax until I come back home to San Francisco. Three thousand miles is a long way to go to relax, but when I’m in work mode it’s hard to put the things I need to do to keep everything running to the side.

Which is part of the reason that when I come back here I’m going to change up the schedule a little bit. Yoga at noon, work, then writing after I get home.

And five days a week of work, because if I’m even remotely considering a temporary move to New York City, I’m gonna need as much money as I can get my hands on. I figure ten grand will cover it, along with some supplemental income from a hustle gig that I’ll find once I get there, and while I’ve got that and then some already, if I’ve got six months to prep before I split I might as well stack that money as high as it will go.

Because once I get there, I ain’t gonna want to do much but write and chill and I’m gonna need money in order to do it.

Speeding up to slow down – it’s what I do.

Some things you can change and others you’d just do best to work with, so I guess I might as well not fight it.

New York City, I’m circling the wagons.
